Exactly as it sounds: a holiday, but at home!
When it happens:
Where it happens:
We take over the whole church building, transforming it into a new ‘destination’ every year. We’ve been to the Serengeti, on the Orient Express, a tour around Scotland and to New Orelans, to name a few.
Holiday at Home runs for 3 days once per year, giving a holiday to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity for one. Each year the holiday is based around a theme, and features activities associated with that theme. Past examples have been crafts, croquet, curling & themed food among others.
Information about Holiday at Home is advertised in the church notice sheet during the months approaching the event, when application forms will also be available.
The team needs your help to make our holiday to Paris a joyful time for our 70+ guests and 30 helpers. There are many practical ways you can help…
Can you bake?
If you’re a master baker or would like to give baking a go for the first time, our guests love a cake/biscuit. Please let Linda Bonner (holidayathome[at]plattchurch.org) know if you can provide some cakes - we’ve even got some French suggestions if you need inspiration!
- Easy biscuits: https://www.bbc.com/food/recipes/langues_de_chat_biscuits_51182
- Easy rolled treats: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/videos/techniques/how-make-and-shape-palmier-biscuits
- More tricky macaroons: https://www.bbc.com/food/recipes/macaroons_04669
- …or provide some mini pain au chocolat?
Do you have any of our ‘decoration’ equipment?
We always want to ‘transport’ our guests to the destination and we provide a makeover of all the spaces in church. We are making each room a different feel from a street café, to a relaxing garden and museum! We need some props to make this happen…
- French flags
- Artist easel and palette
- French magazine and papers
- Large plants
- Old Vintage bicycle
- Any other French themed decorations
Could you help out with transport?
Some of our guests are getting frailer and we do not have enough drivers to transport them to/from church. Could you provide transport in the morning/afternoon on any of the days? Please email holidayathome[at]plattchurch.org if you could drop one of our guests off at 10.45-11am and/or take them home at 4pm.
If possible, please bring any cakes or decorations on 5th or 6th August, clearly labelled with your name and ‘Holiday at Home’
Join us for our ‘Summer in Paris’: 7th –9thAugust
The ‘Holiday at Home’ team is excited to share our plans for 2018 after being in New Orleans and in the ‘new buildings’ for the first time last year. We’re heading off to Paris for a stroll down the Champs Elysees, whilst taking a detour for a coffee under the Eiffel Tower.
Holiday at Home is an opportunity for our senior members (Oasis) and our wider community to get a break over the summer without leaving Manchester. The summer can feel really long as many of their regular clubs/meetings take a pause for the summer – Holiday at Home provide three days of fellowship, fun and food. BUT…it needs a group of helpers to make it happen.
Can you bake some cakes, offer transport to or from church, support in the kitchen, play dominoes, spend time talking with people, provide some music or craft activities – if so, we’d love for you to share and serve in all (or part) of our Holiday?
Pick up a helper form from the back of church or fill in our online form: https://goo.gl/O9NS8b
Maybe there is something else you think you could help with or want some more information – if you’ve got something to say or ask, Email holidayathome[at]plattchurch.org or speak to Linda Bonner/William Carey
